day 2: epic road trip

Today…

My kids finally fell asleep about 25 minutes ago.  It’s 11:30 pm.

We started out on the Blue Ridge Parkway.  It was beautiful.

We stopped and had a picnic lunch at one of the overlooks and continued to work our way through the mountains.

Our little lady turned pale.  We put her in the front seat, decided to go towards the next highway back to the interstate instead of turning around back to Asheville.

We discovered that the way we chose out was a path of STEEP MOUNTAINOUS CURVES.

Ted noticed a burnt rubber smell and SMOKE billowing from our car.  Let’s just say the brakes were having a field day.  We got that cooled down and began our descent of the mountain.

We played tag in a parking lot by the side of the road.

We drove more STEEP MOUNTAINOUS curves going as slowly as we could.

J turned white as a sheet and asked to sit in my lap.

I yelled for the throw up bucket.  (Planned ahead.)

It arrived in the nick of time.  And within 3 minutes J was back to laughing and smiling.  And singing.

I discovered that I still do get car sick when I’m not in the front seat.

Our GPS led us through the back roads of North Carolina to get us to our dinner venue.

I cried.

Hannah cried, too.

We ate dinner at Glen’s.

We finally made it to Roanoke, VA.

We got ice cream.  At 9:30 pm.  With three kids who go to bed at 7:30 pm.

We realized that J’s ears may not have popped from the elevation.  Judging by the fact that he can’t seem to hear and he’s talking 10 times louder than ever…I hope that happens soon.

We jumped on the hotel beds.

All in all, I’m glad we chased a dream for Ted.  We failed.  Big time.  But the memories from today?  Some of my favorites.  And I swear I’ll have pictures in these posts soon.

Tomorrow we’re DC bound.  And I cannot wait to see some of my clients, see our precious friends and explore the city.
